This was the deadliest mass shooting in the history of United States . There were two shootings one at West Ambler Johnston Hall and the other at Norris Hall two hourse later . The incident reignited the gun control debate all over the United States . Some argue that guns have become too accesible and any mentally unsound individual like Cho could purchase them without any difficulty These are usually proponents of of HYPERLINK "http /en .wikipedia .org /wiki /Gun_politics " \o "Gun politics " gun control legislation . The people who oppose them are proponents of gun rights . They believe Virginia Tech had a gun-free "safe zone " and it ensured that no student would be carrying any arms . Cho 's rampage could not have been stopped . If proper communication had taken place between various goverment entities Cho could not have acquired two HYPERLINK "http /en .wikipedia .org /wiki /Semi-automatic_self-loading_pistol " \o "Semi-automatic self-loading pistol " semi-automatic pistols . In this way , the Second Amendment , which gives right to the people to keep and bear arms , would not have been compromised in any way

Cho , in 2005 had been declared a danger to himself and was sent for HYPERLINK "http /en .wikipedia .org /wiki /Psychotherapy " \o "Psychotherapy " psychiatric treatment . The Federal Law of the country disallowed those adjudicated as a mental defective ' from purchasing guns . The incident could 've been reverted if the right authorities were involved . The gaps between Virginia State Law and the Federal Law made it possible for Cho to purchase the guns . It was the State 's fault for not reporting to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System about Cho 's HYPERLINK "http /en .wikipedia .org /wiki /Legal_status " \o "Legal status " legal status

The debate between the two sides continues . Both sides are finding it increasingly difficult to compromise on this issue
