Vincent Van Gogh
Running head : RESEARCH Name University Course Professor Date Introduction Vincent van Gogh was born in Groot-Zundert , Holland in the year 1853 He was the son of Reverend Theodorus Van Gogh who brought up his children in a religious and highly cultured fashion . For some reason Vincent 's lacked self confidence and tended to be highly emotional . His unstable character was reflected in his lifestyle and paintings . In his journey to becoming a painter he tried his hand at clerking in a bookstore and selling works of art

. From 1860 to 1880 , Van Gogh crisscrossed Europe trying to find what he was looking for in life . In the process he tried his hand at setting up art schools and mastering the art of painting in collaboration with other artists . He was a victim of epileptic attacks that ran in the family and became increasing violent to the extent of cutting off his ear lobe in a fit of anger . His life ended tragically when he turned a revolver on himself and attempted suicide . He survived the first night but passed on the next day on 27th July 1890
Vincent 's career in the world of art began when he got a clerking job courtesy of his uncle Cent in the Goupil Co . art gallery . He later transferred to London to finish his training . While there he fell in love with his landlady 's daughter , Eugenie , but she spurned his advances . This incident caused him so much despair that he could not function properly and had to be transferred back to England in 1875 With no improvement in his performance he was forced to resign in 1876 He returned to England with haste and was able to find employment in a school at Ramsgate where he taught French and arithmetic . All the while he desired to become a man of the cloth like his father . An opportunity opened up itself when he got employed as an assistant to the Reverend Jones who was the Methodist preacher at Isle worth . His interactions with the parishioners and the poverty in which they lived him moved him to want to serve his life ministering to them . However when he visited his parents in Holland for Christmas , they convinced him to stay behind and pursue other pursuits in life . Uncle Cent came to the rescue again and got him a job in Dordrecht clerking in a bookstore . Still not satisfied with his work , he set about translating the bible into French and German while spending his weekends in the countryside where he felt much at peace with himself and his world
Relenting to his son 's desire , the Reverend sent Vincent to Amsterdam to study for entrance examinations to the University of Theology . For some reason he failed and began to contemplate a life of drawing and painting in the countryside .
