The Vietnam War is rated as one of the deadliest wars that American has ever fought . The United States entered the war incrementally through a series of steps between 1950 until it came to a close in 1973 . The main reason why American got involved with this expensive war was as a result of the Domino Theory , which presumed that if one country fell to communism then just like dominoes the countries around the communist country would fall to communism as well , unless stopped . America took upon itself to disallow the spread of communism around the world especially to resist the attempts by the Soviets towards this end (Robert D . S 1997

When Richard Nixon inherited the war the situation was much worse than ever before . By this time over 500 ,000 Americans were stationed in Vietnam with an average loss of 1200 per month . After taking power , Richard Nixon together with his National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger came up with two premises about the American policy in Vietnam . First it was realized that the war was not Winnable ' conventionally : of which the public would not tolerate the escalation and the continuation of the war because many lives were being lost . Secondly the withdrawal of the American troops unilaterally was not feasible because of the domestic and international implications thus unacceptable .
