Venice in Italy and New Orleans in Louisiana are two cities that have serious environmental problems . They have been sinking year after year due to different natural and anthropogenic factors in the region . The two cities have several thing s in common that make them have similarity in their sinking and flooding problems (Sixeas , 2000 . While New Orleans is located on the sea shore , Venice is sited on a lagoon in

the Adriatic sea making the two cities to be prone sea level changes

According to Long (1998 , New Orleans subsidence is greatly attributed to aquifer compaction related to ground water removal , oxidation of organic soils , tectonic movements and natural water removal from sediments . This problem is made worse by blockage of natural water ways to control flooding which reduces the amount of deposition in the area Similarly , Venice subsidence has been attributed to tectonic movement underground water harvesting , oxidation of organic soils and the type of soil

The major types of soils in Venice and New Orleans are derived from sedimentary rocks that are characterized with irregular depth and consist clay particles that make them unstable for putting up strong and heavy structures above (Church White 2006 . These soils are also poorly compacted therefore making them vulnerable to movement during the occasional land movement in these regions . In addition , these soils have irregular depths and their mineral composition is highly variable (Liu...
