STRIKER 'S LEADERSHIP IN SANDS OF IWO JIMA

After watching the movie Sands of Iwo Jima , I was able to recall a quote "Not everything popular is good not everything good is popular The statement fits Sergeant John Striker like a glove . Sergeant Striker (John Wayne ) was unpopular to his men -- he was rigid , strict and unreasonable . Since training until the war at Iwo Jima , he appeared heartless , acted like a bully and insensitive to his men , who were not used to the rigors of war . His soldiers wished that he could

have been kind , understanding and reasonable . However , under the circumstances , I believe that Sgt . Striker was a good leader

Leadership Qualities

If people are asked to give adjectives that would describe their boss they would give disparate answers -- bossy , stern , insensitive , good autocratic , lenient , insensitive , helpful , responsible , respected goal-oriented , etc . The different words provided , some synonyms , others antonyms , while others uncorrelated , mean that different people exhibit different leadership styles

In an army camp , an officer would shout at a cadet if the latter is lousy or is too slow during marching exercises . In school , some teachers would scold you if you don 't submit your assignments , while others would just act indifferent as if nothing has happened . In an office , some superiors would throw coffee cups at subordinates who don 't do their work , while others would just do the work by themselves

What Are the Qualities of a Good Leader

There is no exact formula for being a good leader as it varies in different situations . A basketball team trailing by a big margin , for example , would sometimes find an inspirational speech by their coach helpful . Replacing a lenient chief with a stern one and who scolds a lot might curb laziness in the police precinct . A superior who sets rigid rules in an art studio might not be effective as it would suppress creativity by his artists

Despite their differences , good leaders have things in common . Among other things , they bring out the best in each of their men , they set mechanisms that would help the team or group achieve their goals , they are competent , reliable and they provide results

Looking at the Circumstances

The attack of , and the thousands of innocent lives lost at , Pearl Harbor in Hawaii was still fresh in everyone one 's minds . People are aware that the Japanese , then , were fierce , were murderers and were heartless . Their brutality , their Kamikaze attacks and their method of warfare show that they won 't hesitate to kill in to achieve their goal of establishing supremacy

Most , if not all , of Sgt . Striker 's men did not have prior experience to violence or any war . Before joining the marines or the army at the invitation of Uncle Sam , they worked as farmers , businessmen , vendors and miners etc . They have yet to learn how to use their rifles , and how not to be shot
