Comparative Analysis of Two Stories

Susan Rowson 's Charlotte Temple : A Temple of Truth ' and Hanna Foster 's The Coquette ' are depictions of women 's life , tragedy social execution , and death . These two stories have many similarities in terms of the characters , the setting , and the main point of the authors It is a simple justification of love , passion , hatred , fear , and anger of the characters all in one specific scenario . The women in these stories described the life of being a woman

, a mother , a wife , and a lover . Rowson and Foster define the meaning and essence of womanhood in a deprived society . Women in the location of the stories are afraid of revealing their failures as a woman that brought death into their path

Rowson 's story is about a woman named Charlotte Temple . She has a rich and peaceful life in the beginning but as time goes by her environment became full of complexities that she could not understand . Charlottes has many dreams but she struggle for her social issues as well as personal issues . Through time , she could not eliminate her burden but she continued to fight for it . At the end of the story , she died not because of health problems but because she has lack of strength to face her current situation with her husband and the people around her

On the other hand , Foster 's story is about a woman named Eliza Wharton Eliza Wharton has a good family but because she wanted to take her freedom , she leaves her husband and become free . In the beginning of her freedom , she became happy with her situation but because of her loneliness , she entertained some suitors . Her two suitors have different intention towards her . One of them wanted to marry her while the other one did not want but just a feeling of challenge to be chosen between him and the other man . When Eliza chooses the one who will not marry her , she finally found out his intention . She realized that she loved the other one but it is too late because he will get married to someone else . Due to confusion and problems , Eliza accepted the seduction of his former suitor but left her once again . She found out that she is pregnant and when she gives birth , she died

These two stories are similar in terms of the characters , the situation the problem , and the cause of death . Though there are some differences between the two , similarities are more considerable . Even if these stories are fiction , it happens in real world . There are women in some parts of the world experienced this form of suffering . The two authors discussed how women as being treated by their society . When they became successful in life , many people will look for negativities of these types of women . That is why death became the only choice to escape from all these social factors that harmed their identity
