Introduction

Asperger syndrome (AS ) is one of the several Autism Spectrum Diss (ASD ) which is characterized by difficulties in social skills and interactions and restricted , repetitive , stereotyped interests and activities

Aspenger syndrome was named after Hans Aspenger who described children within his domain who appeared to have normal intelligence quotient but lacked non- verbal communication skills , could not show empathy with their peers and were physically inept

AS is a combination of symptoms rather

than a single symptom . And as we have seen , a student with aspenger syndrome may have difficulties in

1 . Social interactions

Such a student lacks demonstrated empathy to other students or people within his sphere . They may also experience difficulties in basic elements of social interactions which may include the inability to establish and sustain interpersonal relationship with their colleagues Their social networks are constrained and this makes them to be isolated or socially withdrawn

2 . Restricted and repetitive interests and behaviour

The student displays behaviour that is restricted and repetitive Repetitive in the sense that their behaviour tend to be routinely . They find difficulties in carrying out new activities . They may also demonstrate preoccupation and pursuit of specific and very narrow areas of interests . This could be emanating from a false belief they have

3 . Speech and language

While students with AS may not depict significant general delay in language development , they may show some abnormalities , for instance in literal interpretation and misconception of nuance

Researchers agree that there is no known specific cause of AS though some studies point a finger at heredity . Still to date , there is no specific cure of the dis . There are a number of treatments that can be applied which include medication , Social skills training occupational therapy , educational interventions , speech therapy training and support of parents and Cognitive - Behavioral Therapy (CBT

Our focus is on using cognitive behavioral Therapy (CBT ) for students with AS but let us first explore some of the current educational interventions used on students with AS

A teacher applying this mode of treatment has the option of choosing the most appropriate school set depending on the particular case of the student he / she is handling . The teacher may choose a special school , regular school or a home- based setting or a combination of these as the most appropriate setting for the particular case in question . Provided such a teacher is able to give the justification of using one setting and not the other , and if such a setting will actually produce better results , then there is no big problem . But such a setting must not be discriminative , unethical or one that contravenes the rights of the student . Since CBT seeks to make the client (student ) an active participant in the intervention , they should be actively involved in deciding the appropriate school set up for...
