Paper Topic:

Using PV(photovoltaic) in Qatar

ABSTRACT

The search for alternative sources of energy is actively participated by develop and developing countries alike . Government and private sectors alike are both intensely looking into answers for renewable resources which may compliment or replace existing fossil fuel power generation methods currently relied upon

Sunlight or solar energy is being highlighted as one of the possible solution to the energy problem . Fossil fuels that are expected to be depleted in the next decades , countries are now searching for means to make solar power available and sustainable

In the Middle

East region , where sunlight is experienced in abundance solar power is being reviewed and eyed as a sustainable replacement to fossil fuel generation . But with the current high cost of production studies are being conducted to substantiate the viability of this renewable resource

This study intends to review the country of Qatar and the feasibility of utilizing solar energy as an alternative for fossil fuels , which is currently employed in its power generation requirements

INTRODUCTION

Many developed and developing countries are in constant search of alternative source of energy that would be able to replace fossil fuels Due to the high cost of generating power using fossil fuels , many are looking into renewable energy sources

These renewable sources offer diversity of energy supply and may replace fossil fuels as the primary source of energy due to its limited quantity and rising cost ADDIN EN .CITE IEAIEARenewable Energy200818 JanInternational Energy Agencyhttp /www .iea .org /textbase /s ubjectqueries /keyresult .asp ?KEYWORD_ID 4116OECD IEA (IEA , 2008 One of the promising renewable sources of energy that is being developed is the use of Photovoltaic cells or harnessing of solar energy to generate electricity

The search for renewable energy sources points to photovoltaics , wind solar thermal electricity , and biomass-produced electricity . These are highly prized due to the ease at which electricity can be transported and converted into othe forms , with the or low polluting energy that these bestow and because of the potential that these sources may contribute in the near future

Since the discovery of Photovoltaic properties during 1839 by a French physicist named Edmund Becquerel , the technology has been developed and harnessed . Today , Solar energy is harnessed to generate power enough to power a household and industrial facilities as well ADDIN EN .CITE Corrosion_DoctorsCorrosion_DoctorsHistory of Photovoltaic Systems200818 January2007http /www .corrosion-doctors .org /Solar /photo-hist .htm (Corrosion_Doctors , 2007 PV was originally developed to provide power to devices on places that would require a renewable source of energy like in outer space . With the development of PV devices or solar devices , PV cells have been used in providing power to spacecrafts and devices . The first reported usage of PV cells was during 1959 for the Vanguard 1 satellite using silicon wafers in the solar device

Today the challenge for PV technology is to gain high efficiency , high uniformity and high yeild over large areas . It is the target of scientists and government institutions to produce a solar cell that is both low cost and yet...
