Movement of people from rural settings to living in urban places has been a key factor in the process of rapid urbanization experienced in this time period . Looking back into about 125 years ago , it is clear that urbanization was very low compared to the current state of urbanization . However , the dawn of the 20th century saw some countries such as European countries Canada and the United States experience a surge in the number of people who resided in urban places . The urban revolution spearheaded by industrialization was also marked with an increase in populations who moved from rural to urban residences .
