Many companies ' executives expressed a concern that the college graduates do not exhibit necessary skills needed for successful functioning on the work place . It is to the agreement of many researchers (Palmer , 1996 that high schools in general do not teach their students needed study skills and those come up short when are faced with increased complexity of the text and the study work load

Another consideration was to examine and deserved more attention is the increased level and amount of knowledge taught . While the society experienced the information overload , the post secondary institutions become more and more challenged to decipher new knowledge and to transmit it to the new students . The resulting suggestion of many researchers becomes a strong encouragement to develop curriculum and to organize the classes that would target specific study skills . Some researchers do not stop at this encouragement but suggest a concrete definition and exploration of what exactly can be considered the study skills . Caverly and Flippo (2000 approach the study skills from the point of view as the process . In other words , if a student must engage in a process in to learn something , to do so he or she must activate certain conditions and actions . From this perspective , anything that is required , for example to complete reading of a chapter in the textbook and to understand it with the consequent writing a response to it can be considered study skills . Such are comprehension that includes the following : vocabulary processing (dictionary skills ) fluency , paraphrasing , summarizing concluding , comparing /contrasting , questioning , synthesizing , and analyzing . All of the mentioned are sub skills that are necessary to understand the text fully . The things are getting more complex when the students are required to read , understand , and respond to the technical texts , like those in engineering , chemistry , biology , nursing , medical studies , architecture , and like . Dykeman (1993 ) showed the increased requirement for each of the comprehension sub skills disproportionably with the increased technicality of the language . That is , more technical language becomes the more requirements for the comprehension individual sub skills

Comprehending what you read is not enough . Contemporary students must have good range of writing skills as well . Obviously , you cannot write about something that you did not understand , thus comprehension must come first .
