Many companies ' executives expressed a concern that the college graduates do not exhibit necessary skills needed for successful functioning on the work place . Such are comprehension that includes the following : vocabulary processing (dictionary skills ) fluency , paraphrasing , summarizing concluding , comparing /contrasting , questioning , synthesizing , and analyzing . All of the mentioned are sub skills that are necessary to understand the text fully . The things are getting more complex when the students are required to read , understand , and respond to the technical texts , like those in engineering , chemistry , biology , nursing , medical studies , architecture , and like . Dykeman (1993 ) showed the increased requirement for each of the comprehension sub skills disproportionably with the increased technicality of the language . That is , more technical language becomes the more requirements for the comprehension individual sub skills

Comprehending what you read is not enough . Contemporary students must have good range of writing skills as well . Obviously , you cannot write about something that you did not understand , thus comprehension must come first .
