Brief History of the United Nations

Established in 1945 as a replacement for the former League of Nations the United Nations has since then actively participated in conflict resolution among nations and the prevention of war . Its intervention in conflicts is one of the manifestations of the UN 's goal of facilitating cooperation among nations in the field of international law as well as the economic development of the

third-world nations . The UN also seeks to promote international security and sustain progress in the society as well as to give due attention and resolution surrounding issues regarding human rights . Being an international organization , the UN operates through the guidance of its sets of principles , councils and agreements

The organizational structure of the United Nations is primarily known for its deliberative organ which is its General Assembly . The assembly is comprised of all the member states of the UN and convenes regular annual sessions headed by a president who is put into office among the member states of the UN . The onset of every session usually starts with the chance for all members to address the body over the course of two weeks . By tradition , the president of the general assembly follows the first statement of the UN Secretary-General . In cases where votes are needed for crucial questions , two-thirds of the majority of those attending and voting in the assembly is needed

Since its creation , the United Nations has been a major participant in providing aid to numerous countries in numerous ways . For instance , UN peacekeeping forces were actively involved in times when armed conflict has ended or has paused so as to secure the enforcement of the terms of agreement . The UN peacekeeping forces were also involved in directly intervening during the Korean War as well as the 1999 intervention in Kosovo

One of the most recent issues pressed against the United Nations is the attempt to resolve the conflict between Israel and Palestine by the UN Security Council . For the most part , Syrian Foreign Prime Minister Walid Al-Moualem discussed before the UN General Assembly the root cause of the problem : Arab land being occupied by Israel . The Syrian Minister further added that the war initiated against terrorism has now backfired as terrorists have gained the upper hand by turning the supposedly war on terrorism into a shade of a cultural clash .
