SCI230 Introduction to Life Science

The I chose for my research in the Virunga National Park The National park is located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC ) which is located in Africa . The Virunga National Park date of inscription is 1979 and was added to the endangered list in 1994

The Congo has serious economical and poverty issues . The issues that I am concerned and interested in are the mountain gorillas that inhabit the Virunga National Park

The main issue I will be researching is the poaching

of thousands of the mountain gorillas that have been protected in the conservation . Since the Rwandan war broke out in 1994 the state of the DRC has suffered According to one estimate published in 2003 the war may directly and indirectly have caused the deaths of over 4 million people in DR Congo since 1996 . As has become increasingly common in Africa the victims were almost all civilians

Because of the devastation left behind from the war the Congolese people have had to resort to any means to survive , some have resorted to poaching the mountain gorillas for profit

My research will explore the conservation of the Virunga National Park and the progress the park has accomplished thus far

The Mining Company I work for is currently starting a major mining project in the Congo . I have many colleagues and close friends that have been asked to move to the Congo and start up the new mine . My neighbor has lived there now for about 8 months and has told me many stories of her adventures . All of these stories has peaked my interest in learning more about the Congo
