In conservative India a girl is the property of her father till she gets married , after which she is her husband 's property . Girls are treated like commodities and are married off to men of their parents ' choices as opposed to their own . If the groom is settled abroad then it is more a matter of pride for the girl 's parents . Love marriages are looked down upon . Therefore most Indian girls spend their lives fulfilling other people 's expectations . They are brought up to be accepting and compromising , and to not make their own decisions or take a stand for anything in life .
