The United States Department of Homeland Security was established in November 25th 2002 , under the homeland security act of 2002 in to galvanize together the countries executive branch organizations that were responsible for maintaining the Home land security into one cabinet Agency . This move led to the inclusion of 22 agencies into the new found Department of Homeland Security (Department of homeland Security , 2008 The Department of Homeland Security Differs with the Department of Defense in that the latter is particularly concerned with Military actions outside the country while the former (DHS

) has a mandate to protect the country from within and at its bs with the main goal being to prevent , prepare for and respond quickly to local or domestic emergencies with particular reference being given to terrorism . Upon its initiation by the president (George W . Bush ) signing the bill into law in November 25th 2002 , and Tom Ridge being appointed its first secretary , it became apparent that this was actually one of the largest reorganizations in the US government after the creation of the US Department of Defense
