Since its creation in 1946 , the United Nations Children 's Fund (UNICEF has continuously helped children worldwide to survive and thrive for their rights to education , health , name , and nationality . With 7 ,000 personnel in 158 countries , UNICEF saves 2 .5 million lives a year by providing 40 percent of the world supply of vaccines to the children Nearly 100 million children are now immunized against common illnesses Despite threats whether political or economic , natural disaster or terrorism , UNICEF never fails to fulfill its universal mission , which is

Employing 300 well-known actors , musicians athletes , and artists as Goodwill Ambassadors , UNICEF is a unique organization that has authority to influence decision makers and political leaders to change the world with children . In 1965 , it received the Nobel Peace Prize for promoting goodwill among the nations At 60 , UNICEF faces more challenges as it reaches out to those in need of care and protection , the exploited and the abused

In September 2005 , UNICEF called on world leaders during a summit in for them to reaffirm their commitment . They agreed to work together on behalf of the children , thus support the implementation of the UN Millennium Development Goals for 2015 . Here lies the future of UNICEF in completing these eight goals . The first goal is to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger . Nearly 11 million children die each year before they could reach their fifth birthday due to sickness and hunger About 150 million children under five , one out of four , are malnourished . Second is to achieve universal primary education . Some 121 million children of primary-school-age do not have the opportunity to go to school . Third is to promote gender equality and empower women . Girls are given less chance in education particularly in sub-Saharan Africa South Asia , Middle East , and North Africa . Enrollment rates for girls in primary school of 70 countries are less than 85 percent while 862 million of illiterate adults are women . Fourth is to reduce child mortality . About 30 ,000 children a day die from preventable causes and four million die in their first month of life . Fifth is to improve maternal health . Each year 500 ,000 women die due to childbirth complications . Out of 100 women aged 15 to 49 , 30 do not have antenatal care and 42 do not have skilled attendant at delivery . Sixth is to combat HIV /AIDS , malaria and other diseases . Three thousand children die each day of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa while 700 ,000 under 15 have been infected with HIV . Seventh is to ensure environmental sustainability . In developing countries , over half a billion children do not have access to toilets while some 376 million drink water from unsafe sources . Over 614 million children have poor living conditions Two hundred forty-six million children are exploited through labor while 20 million others are forced to flee their homes due to armed conflicts Eight is to develop a global partnership for development .
