Tutorial presentation-Three questions derived from the required readings

Question 1 : Do you think that institutional racism as identified by Mooney is socially ingrained that only a miracle could ever give equal services to indigenous Australian 's

Answer : Australia have had a long history for ignoring the aboriginal people of Australia , they have claimed that Australia was empty when they first arrived in the colony and just recently revoked this position without giving the aboriginal people dignity to be fully recognized as rightful ancestral owners of the land (Mooney , 2003 p10 . This would mean that Australian culture in general do not

acknowledge indigenous people and do not care for their plight . The cases of institutional racism that Mooney talks about are proof that aborigines are regarded as nuisance , an inconvenience and are not important to the country as they do not significantly contribute to the economic welfare of the country but instead demands to be taken cared of by the government and be allocated funds (Mooney , 2003 p11 . Institutional racism is prevalent because each white Australian shares the sentiment of racial discrimination against the indigenous people . Institutional racism is too socially rooted in each dominant white Australian that it would take nothing less than a miracle to have equal services and funds made available to indigenous Australians . In fact , anti-indigenous racism have permeated not only the institutional level but in every fabric of Australian society (Paradies , 2005 p2

Question 2 : If you were given the chance to decide on a legislation that enabled aboriginal people to be given greater healthcare services than whites , what would your stand be

Answer : It would be premature to decide on anything , looking at the present situation and from the examples of Mooney , it is obvious that white Australians benefit more , are given more funding , given more preferential treatment options and have more funding (Mooney , 2003 p11 Although , we want to ensure equality , the argument that aborigines have more health care needs because they are more sickly and unhealthy is not enough to pass a law that would say that they should have greater funding . Mooney is arguing about equality but giving more healthcare benefits to aborigines is also not the answer to the issues of equality and justice for the aborigines . There is a need however to examine the existing government agencies that control the healthcare system and to identify the real and true extent of racial discrimination in all aspects of society (Mooney , 2003 p11 . It is therefore important that resolving the issue of racism be not just focused on having the dominant race provide for the lesser race (Paradies , 2005 p5

Question 3 : When Mooney said that Australia lacked the compassion to take care of the aboriginal people , what do you think he meant by this

Answer : Compassion can be thought of as genuine and sincere caring and looking after for the well-being of people who are in need . Aborigines with their vast but poor lands , their illiteracy and numerical problems and their sickly children and elderly are qualified to be...
