Perhaps one of the most important happenings which changed the worldview of grooming international terrorism was the series of attacks on the country by Islamic extremists . Background

Although terrorist activities were prevailing to a large extent and mainly directed to U .S and British interests , no one had expected such a devastating act within the American soil . American properties outside its bs , particularly in countries where terrorist were very active was indeed acknowledged as susceptible and appropriate actions taken However , the domestic angle was not seen as a threat . Flights to and from the U .S were under high security , but threat of domestic flights were ignored . Although the National Command Authority had the power to shooting of a commercial flight , the flight should originate from outside U .S (NCTA . The 9 /11 attacks were carried out using hijacked domestic flights

Significance

The attack changed the perception of terrorist violence , the world over Almost all countries were unanimous in denouncing the act . U .S began to retaliate , accusing Osama Bin Laden as the main conspirator . It asked the then Afghan Taliban ruling Afghanistan to hand over Bin Laden . The request being turned down , the U .S attacked the Taliban , overthrew it and replaced it by a new government under Hamid Karzai . It then turned to Iraq , toppled Saddam Hussein and established a new democratic government there . These changes in the terrorist based countries , made other countries take a tough stand on terrorism , like in Pakistan . The fall of Iraq to the U .S and its subsequent occupation is an important event widely acknowledged as having huge implications . For decades , Hussein was seen as the leading defiant figure to American authority . After the capture and handover of Afghanistan , the U .S turned to Iraq , but a defiant Saddam , held on and fought back . Iraq eventually came under U .S control .
