Nature and Nurture in ESL In teaching English as a second language , the role of nature and nurture cannot be ignored nor denied . An efficient way of teaching English is by encouraging the students to not just learn the language The students have to actually use the language in everyday life . As an ESL teacher , I can consider my teaching method successful if I am able to make the student appear like a native English speaker . This can only be achieved with practice . Diction , vocabulary , grammar and comprehension can be greatly improved

if one would use the language on a consistent basis
The role of nurturing is evident . If a student is learning English , the environment of the student must contain English . If a student knows English but he does not encounter English in his daily life , the student will most likely lose whatever he /she has learned over time . Continuous nurturing is necessary . If English is not existent , the teacher must persuade the student to read English books or watch English movies to improve the student 's English skills . Talking to someone using English is better though
As for nature , the student must learn to treat the second-language as his /her natural language . If the environment has English , it will become natural for a student to respond with English .
