Summary

The play begins with a of the setting : a kitchen in a now abandoned farmhouse of a man named John Wright . The scene depicts the kitchen as having assorted sights of mess and neglect . In the process key characters of the play are introduced . The first who enters the room via backdoor is Sheriff Henry Peters , followed thereafter by County Attorney George Henderson and Lewis Hale , a farmer who is a nearby

neighbor of the Wrights . Also , they are accompanied by their respective wives - Mrs . Peters and Mrs . Hale . With their introduction , The County Attorney begins to converse with the ladies while the Sheriff heads some sort of preliminary investigation as he lets Mr . Hale tell the story of what he has supposedly seen and experienced the morning before . As he explains that his purpose of visit was mainly to inform and identify interest of telephone installation from Mr . Wright , he begins to tell the startling outcome of his conversation he had with Mrs . Wright . He illustrated just how he saw and heard her , rocking back and forth on here chair and pleating her apron , as she calmly explained Mr . Wright unavailability - for he was already dead , due to a rope slipped around his neck . Most details of her story were quite surprising to Mr . Hale for one , she mentioned that they slept on the same bed hence , Mrs Wright would have known...
