The first email scam may exist in the early 90 's but only in a decade , it has spread into the global network and become an annoyance that we all familiar with . In 2003 , IDC estimates that spam represented 23 of all email sent everyday in North America . Statistics also revealed that anti-spam solutions

have helped organizations save millions of dollars in lost email user and IT staff productivity . The cost of dealing with spam has also risen from 20 .5 billion in 2003 to 198 billion in 2007 . The number has been grown since , as spam senders are growing smarter in their efforts avoiding anti-spam precautions (Mueler , 2007

In the world of business , the first electronic spam was encountered via email . This was only considered a minor annoyance because of its harmless nature , unlike malicious emails or scam emails . However , the world of business has recognized spam as a major problem today . Spammers in the global context have gone from putting spam content in e-mails , to putting it in attachments , in password-protected attachments in image s , in web-pages they link to , etc . Most of these `techniques ' are designed to keep spammers one step ahead of anti-spam vendors and all their protective measures
