Depression is a condition in which the individual experiences an unusually low mood along with absolutely negative thoughts and feeling such as helplessness , pessimism , distress , suicidal ideas and a feeling of giving up (Parker , 2000 . This seriously affects with the normal functioning of the individual at the home , workplace , social settings or at the school . The individual has a very low self-esteem and behaves in an abnormal manner . The depression tends to run for durations longer than 2 weeks (according to the APA DSM-IV-TR Classification Depression should clearly be differentiated from normal sadness and bereavement . Additionally , several symptoms , signs and problems are experienced by the individual (Parker , 2000 . Depression occurs more commonly that expected , and a seemingly normal person may in fact suffer from the condition . The overall incidence of depression is about 2 to 5 in the population , and the lifetime prevalence is 10 to 20 (Parker 2000 . In the US , about 3 of the population suffers from depression at any given time (Keller , 2001 . Women are more often affected than men with depression (in the ratio of 2 :1 (Parker , 2000 . Several factors such as biological , genetic , environmental , personality traits exposure to traumatic life-episodes , physical diss , social issues etc , play a role in the development of depression (Lloyd , 1999 , pp 1000 . The individual affected with depression should be treated immediately , so that the symptoms and signs can be relieved immediately acute exacerbations can be managed , the quality of life can be improved and the risk of suicide or bodily harm is eliminated . Various treatment measures may be required in the management of depression such cognitive therapy , behavior therapy , family therapy , psychodynamic approaches Cognitive-behavioral therapy , medications , hospitalization Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT ) and /or other treatment measures .
