This is different with other branch of economy in the way that , in transportation economics , the assumptions are spaceless , and instantaneous economy does not hold (Leeds , 2007 . Just like in the other branch of economics , the popular supply and demand theory holds also in transportation economy . The supply in a transportation economy is the number of all journeys while the supply will be the capacity of the total journeys and will account to the prices of each journey . One of the main purposes why transportation economy was created is to analyze all the resources that seek a specific purpose . That is why transportation models were developed . Most transportation model seeks the minimization of the total cost of transporting a commodity from a number of sources to several destinations . The supply at each source and the demand at each destination are known (Mozer , 2007 . Mode of transport pertains to the forms or modes of transporting an individual or commodity between two different locations . There exist different modes of transport and these include road transport , railway transport , air transport and sea way transport . Some modes are expensive while others are cheap . others are fast whereas others take long to travel . Because of the different characteristics of each mode of transportation , many companies and other sector in the society want to choose the best mode of transportation considering many factors . If a company wants to transport commodity that is heavy and at faster rate , air and railroad transport will best fit to the given factors . That is why many companies tries to examine all the kinds of transportation modes that will best fits on their requirements .
