Slave trade in the United States began immediately the English colonists settled in the country around Virginia in the year 1607 Slavery was a legal institution until the year 1865 when the 13th constitution amendment was passed . Prior to the formation of chattel slavery , labor was organized through a system which was being referred to as indentured servitude . Under this system , black and white laborers were being hired on contractual basis and labor was being used as a means of paying

for peoples ' transportation to different colonies . In the 18th century , court ruling introduced slavery based on racial orientation and the blacks were the targeted group . Following the independence of United States , the issue of slavery abolishment became paramount especially in the north and in the year 1808 , slave importation was officially banned by the congress . Despite this ban illegal slave trade continued in the south owing to the fact that agriculture and more so cotton farming was flourishing

Introduction of cotton farming in the south led to a rise in the demand for labor thus increasing the need for slavery in this area . Also , other countries like India had started cotton farming which increased competition and as such , reduction of cost was a major goal for cotton farmers in South . Also , immigrants were demanding higher pay for their labor which made slavery more desirable for the cotton farmers .
