The ISO 14001 standard is a certification given by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO , a worldwide federation that promotes the development of trade , communications , and manufacturing standards internationally , that specifies the requirements for the implementation of environmental management systems (EMS (ISO 14001 :2004 , 2005 . At our company , Shell Oil Company , having achieved the ISO 9001 , it was much easier to plan and execute a restoration program for implementing an EMS . An environment policy , which also included a commitment to continually improve and comply with

environment regulations , prevent pollution , was approved by the top management and posted in various offices and sites for our employees and customers

The Implementation Team

The first step for achieving this was first to analyze the benefits of being ISO 14001 certified and how to integrate it with the way we do business . The employees had to come up with suggestions on how to deliver environmental improvements that are relevant and beneficial to our customers and stakeholders . A team comprising of manufacturing director , quality controls analyst , environment manager , engineering representative , and supply chain manager was chosen and charged with the task of implementing the EMS . This team was given full support by the top management and the required resources availed to them . They had to assess various environmental factors necessary for achieving the business goals of the company
