In Chapters 2-4 , the narrator , George Ponderevo relates his experiences at Bladesover House and what he thought of it . As a way of showing how he detested the ways of the Bladesover House , he related how his cousin Nicodemus defers to his wife and the way he handles his business . Such attitudes , the narrator came to ascribe to the way in which they adhere blindly to religion . George was scared by his cousins about the possibility of his burning in hell and the way God would punish him

br because of his unbelief . Yet , George remains remorseless and still held on to his dislike for religion . After the Bladesover House , George was brought by his mother to another relative at Wimblehurst

These chapters in the story present the boy George and how he was honing his powers of perception , observation and keen attention to details . His attitude and unbelief with religion was distinctly presented including the reasons why he did not believe that way . They also present his development as a person and as an apprentice of a chemist uncle . He is being shown the different sides of the world he inhabited . He is keenly developing an awareness of what London is truly like

These chapters also show the beginnings of the rise of George in the society . His experience at the school also provides a contrast to his views of the world , his disdain of mediocre professors and the way that he detested submitting s with blunted conclusions . His failure at the school is also contrasted with his need for scholarship . As the narrator contemplates his next moves , he presents a critique of the educational system and how it is not helping young men prepare for the future that they will have to face sooner or later
