There would be , though , differences in which these tertiary issues would manifest themselves in Morrison 's novels . For some , pacifism would be the dominant tool in their characterization such as for Pecola who was constantly being ridiculed by her family and especially by Cholly for being too dark . For others , their characterization would come in the form of their lack of placement or acceptance in society

The education of the main characters of the novel are limited to Pecola and even then the fact of education would remain and elusive path from which they are denied entry . Thus , blacks in the novel are subdued by the white culture and remain ignorant through racial prejudice . It is through this lack of education that both Cholly and Pecola have low confidence , low drive , and low self-worth

The problems that plagued Morrison 's characters were the fact that the white man has brainwashed us black people to fasten our gaze upon a blond-haired , blue-eyed Jesus . This is the ideal by which Pecola makes her standard of beauty . This brainwashing came to create the rift between the black members of society , and between the man and women of that culture . This fact is plainly seen with Cholly and Pecola . Cholly despises his daughter and lets her know his disposition by constantly ridiculing her for how dark she is but at the same time he wants to own and damage her through sexual acts

Sethe is the central figure in the novel Beloved . She was a slave in Kentucky but took off with her four children to Cincinnati . After this daring escape from slavery she was found a month later and after being found she sought the only way she believed would be her salvation from slavery which was that Sethe murdered one of them .
