Thomas Jeffrey Hanks , popularly known as Tom Hanks , was born in Concord , California on the 9th of July 1956 . Being a product of a broken family caused by the divorce of his parents , Hanks lived only with his father , and two older brothers and sisters . This has led their family to experience an unstable family life as they moved from one place to another , until finally settling in Oakland , California . Shortly after graduating high school , he attended college in Hayward , California where

he took up courses that were not related to acting whatsoever . However when Hanks was able to watch The Iceman Cometh ' a full length play written by Eugene O 'Neill , he was inspired to become an actor . He was amazed by O 'Neill 's first stage performance and instead of finishing a degree in Hayward , he decided to take up a degree in theater acting in California State University , Sacramento . Hanks ' first experience on stage was the series of productions set for Shakespeare 's plays as fuelled by the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival .
