On the one hand , death penalty is considered to be against national values and beliefs Therefore , it is viewed as inhumane and barbaric . The author notes that highest criminal rates are in the South and West as the frontier tradition is the strongest in these regions . He is pretty right because it is known that people who live there accept violence as a normal thing when it goes about defense and their self-protection . It is claimed that death penalty is cruel and barbaric but Southern people fully supports it as slavery greatly influenced their perception of violence and capital punishment . Consequently , the rates of homicide between the South and West dramatically differ and historians and sociologists claim that the difference is due cultural differences . I fully agree with such suggestion because I think that if people see deaths every day they will consider them normal

Everything depends on culture and regional traditions , in my opinion For example , Cohen argues that Southern people are more likely to support violence to protect themselves , their homes and property , honor and dignity compared with the Western population . Regional differences refer , mainly , to way of execution and sentencing laws , not public opinion . However , South is more prone of capital punishment that other regions . Statistics speaks for itself : practically all Southern and Western States provide death penalty , whereas only 10 out of 23 of the Northern states support capital punishment
