Covenant ideas between God and men arose from the ideas covenant between men . However covenant between men and God in the Old Testament did not take the form of agreements between different contradicting parties who stand on an equality but God the almighty and the superior , always took the initiative . These form of covenant between men and God varied at different cases and to some extent they are referred to as mutual agreement . God used his commands to make promises

and men agreed to keep these commands . God promises were conditioned on men 's obedience Therefore the Old Testament covenant between men and God are Divine Ordinance which had signs and pledges on part of the God and promises for obedience on the part of men and penalties for disobedience . The ordinance was accepted by men (Barber Barber , 2001

The difference between covenants and contracts in the Old Testament is profound . The human being notion of contract differs in two ways from the biblical covenant . First covenant involves oaths while the other involves promises . When a person enters into a contract for example to buy a parcel of land he makes a promise to the owner by giving him his words to pay a certain amount of money for the piece of the land . The owner of the land on the other hand makes a promise by giving his words that he will turn over the deed to the piece of land...
