The Prison Called Marriage : A Comparative Analysis of

The Story of an Hour ' and A Sorrowful Woman

Even today , women still look forward to marriage and the idea of a family . However , what many vision as a bright and new chapter in their lives becomes the beginning of the end for others . In The Story of an Hour ' and A Sorrowful Woman ' the authors reveal how married women would eventually feel trapped in their marriage because of the

roles they had to portray and fulfill , causing them become frail individuals and eventually causing their untimely deaths in the end

In Kate Chopin 's The Story of an Hour ' Mrs . Louise Mallard reacted just how any married woman would upon learning that her husband had just died in a car accident . She wept at once , with sudden , wild abandonment , in her sister 's arms (Chopin 15 . Her reaction would not come as a surprise on the part of the reader of the story since it is a reaction expected from a woman who had just lost her husband unexpectedly

This was apparent in Chopin 's of Mrs Mallard as a young woman [ .] with a fair , calm face , whose lines bespoke repression [ .] (15

Mrs . Mallard saw her husband 's death as the chance for freedom . No longer would she be confined to do the wills of her husband . [ .] she would live for herself (Chopin 16 . She begins to look forward to the life that she is before her . Unfortunately , her joy was only short-lived . The vision of her husband alive by the door brought her back to the harsh reality that she would not have the life that she was looking forward to . The idea of continuing to live as how her husband desired after realizing how wonderful a life without him could be was just too much for her to bear

In contrast to this , Godwin 's A Sorrowful Woman ' starts just like any fairy tale story would , beginning with the phrase once upon a time [ .] (39 . Godwin 's approach to how she began to the story reminds all of us how a bride feels on her wedding day : a fairy tale coming true...
