He has a mind that can be educated , a hand which can be trained , ambitions which it is right for him to strive to realize , and it is the duty of the public to help him make the best of himself so that he can win light through work Helen Keller Helen was born as a healthy baby girl on June 27 , 1880 in Tuscumbia

Northwest Alabama , United States of America to Captain Arthur Henley Keller and Kate Adams Keller . Their family lived in a simple house and her parents are both working in a cotton plantation and also have other jobs such as editor of a weekly local news for her father and by making butter , lard , bacon and ham for her mother . When Helen was nineteen months old she was diagnosed by doctors with brain fever , or modernly known as meningitis . The sickness caused her to lose her sight and hearing . Helen became both blind and deaf . Because of the result of the sickness , Helen became difficult with her tantrums and screaming and failed to respond to the household . Her relatives considered her a monster and advised her parents to place her in an institution .
