The streets of New York smelled of death the Pentagon House reeked of fury . It rocked the whole nation and the world as well , signifying one absolute message : the world is definitely at war

This is geared towards a critical analysis of a dark phenomenon called terrorism that emerges in the history of mankind . To understand terrorism , it initially attempts to give an extensive definition of terrorism taken from different literature readings . It evaluates the nature of terrorism that includes the root causes , motives , targets , and other relative factors that surround and influence this type of politically-motivated activity

The second part of this research provides a historical account of terrorism in the Western Hemisphere , particularly the Latin American experience . It identifies the names of terrorist organizations classified by the United States government as Foreign Terrorist Organizations . It also illustrated evidences of terrorist attacks from these groups that shaped the region 's political milieu

The last part is the eye opener where a documentation of the possible threats to US and global security is discussed . Apart from that , this gathers counterterrorism measures that the US government and Latin American government have agreed upon to implement . This research has also acknowledged the ideas , thoughts , and advices from political and economic analysts , nongovernmental units , and just about any professional individuals who have shown utmost concern for the situation in the hemisphere

An important section in the last chapter is the discussion on the relationship of media and terrorism and pointing out to the roles of media in terrorism incidents . Arguments dealing with the roles of the mass media are absolutely needed in this current terrorism research . The rationale of this study is to find out how could a modern society react on this phenomenon and how could it benefit from the revolution of information technology . It is important to document how different societies respond to terrorism in different ways

There are some problems encountered during the whole process of research and comparison of data . Where to draw the difference between guerilla warfare and terrorism is a confusing issue at first . There is also the lack of primary determinants of threats and contrasting evidences or analysis of threats by various observers
