Before the September 11 attack , tourism was the largest industry in the world which accounted to one in every twelve jobs . The industry had grown to more than 3 .6 trillion industry . However , the September 11 attack almost brought the industry to its knees and though there have been some progress , the effects remain to be felt all over the world . The ripple effect from the attack was felt beyond the United States to the rest of the world which exposed the vulnerability of tourism sector to security threats .
