In India there are several places in which there a re pilgrimages sites and there are also different ways of in which the pilgrimage sites and temples are categorized in Hinduism . One of this concerns the four Dhamas or the abodes of gods at the four directional compass points of India . While there is no specific legend in the Indian History that would explains the grouping of these four sites together , these sites were each highly regarded by the time of the Mahabharata (500 BC , these four sites ca me to be grouped together by the of the early Puranas which was during the fourth century (4th AD ) and were only given further emphasis only on the ninth century when the great sage and scholar Sri Adi Sankara established monastic centers at them .
