Several different scales can be used for measuring temperature , and the most popular scales are Celsius and Fahrenheit . Both of these scales were introduced in the eighteenth century by European scientists Celsius scale takes the freezing point of water (0 C ) and boiling point of water (100 C ) as references , and the way between these two points is divided for 100 equal temperature units . Fahrenheit scale was based on the coldest temperature of the mixture of salt and

ice , which is taken as 0 F . At that , the freezing point of water is 32 F and the boiling point of water is 212 F

Both Celsius and Fahrenheit are standard temperature units . However Celsius is used in international metric system SI , which is the worldwide system of measurement . Therefore , it is more popular and probably , more beneficial from scientific point of view , because this scale is based on the properties of water which is dominating chemical substance on earth . Fahrenheit scale is widely used in the US and some English-speaking countries , and it is supposed to be more convenient for measuring higher temperatures or for non-scientific use

The algebraic equation , which can be used for conversion of the given temperature from Fahrenheit to Celsius , is the following

Tc (5 /9 ) CH (TF - 32

The algebraic equation , which can be used for conversion of the given temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit , is the following

TF (9 /5 )CHTF 32

Both equations are convenient and very simple . For example , record highest temperature in Washington D .C . was registered in July 1930 as 106 F (Info , 2007 . It can be converted to C as the following

Tc (5 /9 ) CH (106 - 32

Tc (5 /9 ) CH 74

Tc (5CH74 /9 370 / 9 41 .1 (C

Therefore , record highest temperature in Washington D .C . was 41 .1 C

Also , record lowest temperature in Washington D .C . was registered in February 1899 as -26 C (Info , 2007 . It can be converted to F as the following

TC (9 /5 )CHTF 32

TC (9 /5 )CH (-26 32

TC (-234 /5 32 -46 .8 32 - 14 .8 (F

Therefore , record lowest temperature in Washington D .C . was -14 .8 F References
