Our company was an honorary sponsor of a certain charitable foundation aimed at helping immigrant children from socially and economically disadvantaged background . There was a tradition that before Christmas every employee made a donation to this foundation . The donations were

Last year I decided to research the pro of the foundation our company sponsored . Imagine my surprise when I learnt that the foundation was continuously alleged of money laundering and misuse of funds Furthermore , I learned that the executive director of the foundation was an old college friend of our boss

I condemn cronyism of every kind , therefore I felt personally offended by the unethical behaviour of our boss . First of all , I decided to talk this issue over with my fellow colleagues . A fortnight before Christmas the boss personally went to collect the donations . It was a custom that starting level employees donated 30 while junior managers donated 50 . I was the last person in a room whom the boss approached . He uttered a standard formula

Would you like to donate to charity in this Christmas time

My no ' answer came as a shock . With a feigned smile he murmured

But you want to help poor and destitute Puerto Rican kids , don 't you

My response was as follows

I do . And I will . But in a different way

The boss looked irritated and at a loss . He tried to persuade me again

You know that it 's a long and well-established tradition in our company . Do these fifty bucks matter so much for you

I made myself clear

They matter for those who really need them . Therefore I 'm going to donate them to a different fund with a more solid reputation
