Paper Topic:

Telecommunications within the oil and gas industry

The technological advancements in the telecommunications sector have brought about the advent of fiber optics . The oil industry is still yet to embrace the inherent advantages of fiber optics though there have been premier applications of fiber optics in replacing the standard copper wire . Fiber optics is able to function at depths that the copper wire would fail

Oil exploration has now moved to deep seas and the machinery needed to carry out this exploration is getting bigger and bigger . Bigger machineries means more noise which affects standard copper wire transmissions

hence the need for communication that will not be affected by loud sonic emissions

Machine control systems require large bandwidths due to fault tolerance features that are incorporated in the control systems . Fiber optics can handle data transfer rates of 2 gigabytes per second as opposed to copper which can only handle a maximum of 10 megabytes per second

The need for repeater stations is another factor . Fiber optics can transmit data over a bandwidth of 2 gigabytes per second over a distance of 20 miles without the need for amplification . Moreover , fiber optics is less prone to failure in case of water permeation , which could prove to be catastrophic in the case of copper . Fiber optics is not adversely affected by permeation of water unlike copper wire , which breaks down all communication

Fiber optic technology is the way forward in the future of communication . Ability to step up bandwidth in to control heavy machinery effectively coupled with...
