\Abstract

Objective : The goal of this study is to review the level of awareness of teenagers regarding drinking and its effects on health . Summary : Teenage drinking nowadays has been wide spread and uncontrollable . Persons especially teenagers that are engaged in alcohol drinking are at risk of

br health consequences . Alcohol dependence is the major cause of deaths injuries and other related problems that are caused by the misuse of alcohol . Teenagers who engage in drinking are mostly influenced by their peers . They are aware of the health consequences that alcohol inflicts on them yet teenagers are still engaged in alcohol drinking because of the pleasures they get . Different government policies and strategies have been issued to prevent problems regarding alcohol yet it still lacks the power to control teenage drinking

Method : A survey was conducted to 50 students ranging from 14 to 16 years of age at Sacred Heart College , Omagh , Co . Tyrone , Northern Ireland

Results : Data obtained from the survey shows the high rate of teenage drinking on both males and females . Most of them are aware of the effects it has on their health yet still engage in drinking . Parental awareness is very poor and peer influences are high , a significant contributor to high incidence of drinking

Conclusion : Teenagers engage in drinking at an early age despite their awareness of the different effects of alcohol to their body because of the social environment and lack of parental support in their teens Still the lack of policy and programs towards drinking contributes to the less effective measures that counteract drinking among teenagers Early exposure to alcohol drinking by advertisements that are very influential among teenagers has a great impact on teenagers ' attitude towards drinking

Alcohol drinking among teenagers are somewhat been uprising nowadays The extent of teenage drinking nowadays has increased given the wider environmental background . According to the National institute on alcohol abuse and alcoholism 's initiative on underage Drinking , underage drinking has been a public issue , wherein alcohol has became the drug of choice of most among children and adolescent . Annually , about 5 ,000 youth under 21 years old die from motor crashes , other unintentional injuries and homicides .
