Teamwork

It is always good to work with someone else as opposed to working alone . The old adage that says two heads are better than one rings true everytime . This belief in working alongside somebody else can be elevated to the next level and instead of working with a partner it is much better to work with a team of three , five or more people . Teamwork means increased productivity , a sharing of the burden , generation of more ideas , an amalgamation of talents , and strength in numbers . For a university student there is

no better way to go through academic life than with the help of the power of teamwork be it in completing projects or in group study . The following pages will discuss the nature of teamwork and what a student will have to do to become an effective member of the team

The Team

Surviving university is not an easy task . For many it is the first time that they are separated from parents , travelled so far away from home and surrounded by so many foreign things in his or her life . The period of adjustment is made even harder by new surroundings and the pressure of academic life . The increasing difficulty of the workload as one progress from freshman to senior levels can be so daunting that many dropped out or simply find it so difficult to finish what has been started . In this high pressure world of university life a student can decide to journey like a lone wolf or he can join a team

Joining teams can be compulsory or voluntary . When the professor says that there is an upcoming project and that students will have to divide into teams there is no room for argument . In some cases students have the freedom to choose their own team mates but sometimes they are grouped randomly . There are also activities that require group work but students can choose to do it on their own like studying for an exam etc Either way there is a need for students to understand the value of team work and at the same time learn how to become an effective member of the team in to breeze through university life

The Value of Teamwork

Michael West in his book , Effective Teamwork lists some of the reasons why it would be better to work with a group rather than do it alone

enable efficient learning

saves precious time

innovative solutions can be formulated

lower stress levels and thus

more work is accomplished

To the above-mentioned list one can also add that team work is cooperation , the pooling of resources , the amalgamation of talents having different perspectives , seeing the problem from different angles and coming up with different solutions . Team work is also strength in numbers because even with 21st century high-tech gadgetry man is still unable to solve the problem of Newtonian physics that says no two persons can occupy the same space at the same time or the reverse which...
