Teaching strategy Technique

Interviewing

Interviewing is a teaching technique that connects across content areas and promotes the development of higher thinking skills . It is used to connect student learning in the classroom with the outside community and world (Hughes Moore , 2008 . Prior to conducting an actual interview much work must be done in preparation . There are areas the students must be trained in , have practice , and conduct research

First , students must be trained in how to take notes and ask questions . They have to be able to differentiate between details and be able to

question within what they are researching . While they are learning the note-taking skills students should be simultaneously learning to research across content areas . The purpose of this is to build background knowledge of the interview subject . Building background knowledge will also facilitate the comfort level and ease of questioning flow and response during the interview . Secondly , students must be trained in the types of questions to ask in

Interview situations . They must be able to have ample opportunity developing sample questions . Lastly , students must be trained in interview etiquette (Hughes Moore , 2008 . This includes how etiquette and behavior when conducting an interview

As students are being trained they must have ample opportunity to practice in a systematically along with their newly acquired skills This can be accomplished through mock interviews with peers , taking home assignments and conducting interviews with family members and reporting on it in class , and finally staging interviews with the teacher who poses as a character they have researched (Hughes Moore , 2008 . Once they have become proficient in interviewing practices in the classroom students will be prepared for a real ' interview assignment with someone such as a local business owner , local professional , author , etc The choice of subject is really as limitless as the possibilities of what one has access to within their environment and resources

Interviewing is an excellent teaching technique that enhances metacognitive skills and reading comprehension . Students learn self-questioning techniques as they develop note taking and research skills . In the process of their explorations and investigations without even realizing it they are connecting school with the rest of the world
