INTRODUCTION

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards maintains that every child deserves a great teacher (NBPTS , 2006 . But what does it really takes to be a great teacher ? What is being required of the teaching profession ? The Board reported that there are about 55 ,000 teachers that have already been certified since 1987 . How important is the role of teaching in the society that it needs to be certified This will explore the different perspective of teaching . It includes teaching as a

profession , teaching as art , a craft and a science . This also included a discussion on the core qualities that makes a good teacher . It is the author 's objective to fairly present the ideas and information that will expand the knowledge of the readers on the field of teaching . This is the reason why the author used the studies and researches by qualified personalities in the field and reliable materials are being used as references throughout the discussion

TEACHING AS A PROFESSION

There are people who place a high regard to teaching by considering it as a noble profession . It is noble because besides the fact that it is a low-paying job , there are people who still have the noble desire to impart their knowledge and skills to the students . Others consider teaching as a calling because of the persons who find their happiness in teaching . Still others consider teaching as a social obligation that being educated in his own country and by his own countrymen , it is but fair enough to share what he or she acquired to the others who are in need of education . Despite these positive views on the teaching profession , there are those who express their grievances in the profession they chose to engage in

Teaching is a difficult work requiring substantial preparation and clinical experiences along with the right kinds of supports and incentives (SECTQ , 2005 . As second parents , teachers play a big part in shaping the future of their students . The qualities of students they produce reflect the quality of education they have provided them Therefore , the Southeast Center for Teaching Quality (SECTQ ) must be right that teaching is a difficult work . If the quality of education is to be of high priority , not just anyone can be a teacher . SECTQ mentioned of the right kinds of supports and incentives , which can be initially interpreted as teachers are not given their due support and incentives . Teachers , like other professionals , need the right amount of motivation . As one of the principles of management goes , a highly motivated worker is a productive worker

In a report made by UNESCO , teaching is becoming a hard sell profession . The report revealed that the shortage of teachers is evident in different countries which scout teachers from other countries .
