Homework is an extremely important aspect of the general education curriculum that has been widely recognized to be a vital part of academic success . Traditionally , homework has been the tool of the teachers to provide additional learning time and to strengthen study and organizational skills

Teachers can get more class time for active learning like discussions or small group tasks if the students arrive with duly completed homework In addition to the daily reading assigned to the students , teachers

br should assign them a daily written product based on textbook chapters and other readings . Such assignments may include summaries , response application , notes and important questions . Students should be trained regarding how to apply reading strategies to the textbook , how to annotate , how to take notes , how to use visual cues and how to handle new vocabulary . The teacher should always ask for a written response to the reading . The process may be made interesting by varying the kind of responses the students are asked to write . At the beginning of the course , the writing-to-learn tasks should be kept informal , emphasizing personal writing and not focusing unduly on grammar . Too much concentration on grammar may shift the focus from the learning procedure to merely pleasing the teacher (Lamb , 2007

A daily homework check at the beginning of the class is mandatory to ensure that the students are really doing their homework . Teachers should stamp the homework with their initials and glance through the notebooks to ensure that it is indeed the homework , which had been assigned for the course and not merely the notes scribbled down at previous classes . Although it is a good rule that all assignments should be completed by the end of the semester , late submissions are not stamped . However , a safety net should be allowed for a few late unstamped assignments in case of emergencies

A good teacher always assigns reading and writing in a meaningful way In fact , there is a wide variety of tasks that students may be asked to perform . That can be asked to apply textbook concepts to concrete cases and answer teacher posed questions . Following the teacher assigned criteria of good homework , they can analyze and revise written work synthesize , compare and contrast to evaluate or support a position . If such active learning tasks are designed well , synchronized with the course objectives by helping the students to prepare for tests , and assigned s , the students will definitely see the tasks as meaningful and worth their participation . An important rule , which should be adhered to by all teachers , is that students who fail to do their homework should be excluded from the group work and made to sit alone and complete their unfinished task .
