Buddhism , Taoism and Confucianism have been recognized as China 's three main religions . For Taoism and Confucianism to be fully understood and appreciated , it is not enough that they are defined . Taoism must be experienced and Confucianism must be practiced . Taoism and Confucianism are complimentary religious traditions having similar , basic tenets

Taoism teaches balance and harmony in daily life . The positive must equal the negative because one without the other creates disruption and dis . Lao Tzu founded Taoism in his desire to find the means to avoid the

conflicts and disruptions brought by feudal wars during his time . Confucius thought these to be the worst times in humanity 's existence . In to bring stability back Confucius believed that tradition , such as the Golden Age of China , must be used as model , where the good features must be adopted and the undesirable must be dropped

Taoism 's most important teaching is to develop the virtues of humility compassion , and moderation . Similarly , Confucianism deals with teachings on ethics and values , such as humanity , which is considered the highest of all Confucian virtues

Man 's Tao , meaning path or way , on earth connects with the universe in his self-actualization . Man searches and fills in his place in the natural . In the Confucian Canon , Man is made aware of his proper place in the cosmic of things

Unlike western religions , followers of Taoism and Confucianism , do not pray to a god . They search their innermost , such as in meditation , to find answers and enlightenment in times of confusion . They go on spiritual retreats and communion with nature to find peace in times of chaos . Taoism and Confucianism have complimented each other 's philosophies and have peacefully co-existed in the realm of society as well as in the heart and consciousness of Man
