This paper attempts to review the journal article by Ramlall Sunil (2004 ) which relates to employee motivation and retention and the implications of the theories that underpin these aspects of employee existence within organizations . The author starts by providing a philosophical foundation for the article by stating that retention challenges face organizations of all types and sizes despite technological advances and other market advantages . The author strengthens the basis of the article by referring to the motivation theories that necessitate employee retention endeavors in the organization . First , the author points out that the needs theory of motivation is essential for understanding the internal factors that bolster behavior . These are basically psychological or physiological deficiencies which lead to behavior arousal . In order for the organization to retain employees on the basis of this theory , it is important for the management to understand that the human needs are not static but keep changing over place and time . The second theory highlighted is the Maslow 's Need Hierarchy Theory which gives human needs in order of importance . Therefore , the organization must understand that once one level of needs has been satisfied , employees will be motivated and encouraged to want higher needs .
