Abstract A Tale of Two Cities is one of Charles Dickens ' final novels . Critics say that this was not his usual style in writing for it is heavily narrative and that it lacks humor and dialogues , which are almost always present in his other novels This novel was made more famous when it was made as a silent film in 1911 . This book dealt with a lot of social issues at that time . Circling on the unrest on Paris at that time , its people , its political system , and also quite fascinatingly Dickens was able to relate all of this happening to different symbolisms mentioned throughout the book . One of the most famous authors of all time , Charles Dickens was born as Charles John Huffam Dickens on February 7 , 1812 , in Landport , Portsmouth in Hampshire . He was second of eight children to John and Elizabeth Dickens . His family moved from Portsmouth to England , and then to Chatham , Kent when he was five , where he spent most of his childhood Then they moved again when he was ten to 16 Bayham Street , Camden Town in London . Charles ' father was a clerk in the Navy , but was not a good money keeper , and eventually buried in debt , he was imprisoned . Charles quit school to work in a boot-blacking factory to help his family . He earned six shillings a week pasting labels on the jars of thick polish This experience working in the factory would later on appear in more than one of his many novels , where he focused on the poor and the oppressed . When his father was released from prison , he went back to school but decided to stop going at the age of fifteen . He then worked two jobs , in two legal firms as a law clerk . Here he learned shorthand and the legal processes and at the age of seventeen he became a court stenographer . This knowledge would later on be helpful in writing most of his novels again . Dickens became a Parliamentary reporter for the Mirror of Parliament and the True Sun . He also traveled across Britain by stagecoach to cover election campaigns for the Morning Chronicle . He then submits sketches to periodicals on 1833 and his first collection of pieces was formed and was titled Sketches by Boz , and published in 1836 .
