YES YES The episode I watched was the pilot episode of the television program Jericho , which focuses on the residents of a small town in Kansas and how their

lives are affected in the aftermath of nuclear attacks . The first half of the pilot focuses on the return of prodigal son Jake Green and the reactions of locals towards his sudden return . Jake , who has been gone from the town for five years , has returned to collect the inheritance left to him by his late grandfather and make peace with his family , particularly his stoic father , the Mayor Johnston Green . Jake is refused his inheritance , and dejectedly leaves town to continue to find his own way

The second half of the pilot , sees a nuclear explosion detonate in the nearby city of Denver which cuts the town 's power supply and terminates most modern forms of communication and much panic ensues . As such , the thrust of the pilot is entirely upon Mayor Green 's attempts to determine the cause of the explosion and stabilize town morale . A key source of drama is a missing school bus that has failed to return from a field trip , and the concern experienced by Jake 's family over his whereabouts following the explosion . Fear is also a recurring presence - Jake fears the death of someone he is trying to save , schoolteacher Heather fears for her students ' well-being and Jake 's mother April fears for the safety of her son

Despite the dys nature of the premise , Jericho maintains an undertone of optimism as epitomized by the denouement . As such , not much in the way of contempt is displayed , not even towards the panicked townspeople who begin bickering over various supplies . Still , joy or happiness are a scarce presence : while there is some sense of relief following the resolution of small dramas , the only moment approaching happiness is displayed by Heather Linsinski upon becoming acquainted with Jake who is obviously being set up as a potential love interest

If anything , the pilot shows that excessive emotionality can cloud judgment and the ability to solve problems - whether one is a panicked...
