As the world grapple with the increased rates of crimes and threats of terrorism , surveillance technology has come in hand to assist the public . The increasing rate of crime has increase public fears over the safety of their own life and property . On the other hand , the police force , which is traditionally mandated to protect the public seem overwhelmed and stretched in physically fighting for the high rates of crimes . The September 11 attack and other

terrorism attacks in the world have served as constant reminder to the world that the physical means of maintaining security may not be effective in deterring the high escalating rates of crimes . Consequently , surveillance through the use of CCTV and other technology is emerging as an acceptable way of maintaining public security . Surveillance using high level technology has also been accepted as a way of reinforcing the efforts of the police force in fighting crime . Initially confined in the central business areas where the technology was meant to maintain security on the streets , surveillance technology has also been used in other crime prone areas or special interest areas which may become easy terrorism targets .
