Mentoring has proved to be a valuable means of enhancing student and professional success (Cole , 2007 Girves et al , 2005 Scisney-Matlock Matlock , 2001 . Yet , there is little in the social work literature about mentoring experiences from either the perspective of the mentor or the mentee . The proposed study will provide an opportunity to conduct a research study about mentoring within the social work profession . The study will use a quantitative /qualitative research design in which veteran mentors and mentees from a multitude of cultures and countries will complete an on-line survey about social work mentoring . After completion of an on-line quantitative survey created by the principal investigator (PI , a sample of pairs of social work mentors and mentees from different cultures and countries will be interviewed about their mentoring experiences . The goal of the study will be to learn about the components of successful social work mentoring of students . Because the study will include a diverse sample , the PI will be able to make cross cultural comparisons about social work mentoring styles , focus and content . This research study will fill the gap in the literature about social work mentoring which is scarce in the research literature . It will also be valuable for the academy especially CSULB because it will provide evidenced based research about the mentoring process from a cross cultural perspective

The student will help to develop the online quantitative survey about social work mentoring and will translate the survey to Spanish in to distribute this survey in Latin America . The student will contact different Latin American universities and get e-mails from social work professors to invite them to participate in this survey .
