The article by Rediker explores the horrors and terrors of African slavery based on the roles of people and characters involved in a slave trade aboard the slave ship . The actors of this horrific drama are the merchants , the slave captains , the sailors , the captive slaves and the sharks that circles around the ship until it reach its destination . All of these personalities made life in the slave ship a living hell . The greedy capitalist merchants are in the first place responsible

for the infamous journey by securing the ship and its crew The ship captain and the sailors are responsible for inflicting torture and other modes of terror to any slave who staged a mutiny or tries to escape . The African slaves are unfortunate captives forcibly taken away from their native land and families , chained and crowded together in the uncomfortable lower decks for a long journey to a lifetime of physical labor in the New World . The inhuman and oppressive condition of the ship causes madness , sickness and death among the slaves . At times , slaves would openly display their resistance through insurrection but oftentimes they are subdued and subjected to the most painful human torture ever ( for example , a slave is tied in a rope and lowered down to the sea for the sharks to eat parts of his body ) to serve as an example . The sharks , on the other hand , add to the terror for aside that they eat the dead...
