Summary , Analysis , And Persuasion

In Evan 's Two Moms , Anna Quindlen illustrates that preventing two people from making their commitment to each other public and according to law because they have the same sex is absurd . Quindlen begins her essay by drawing the recent instances of victories for same-sex marriages : an approved adoption to a lesbian couple , approved guardianship to a lesbian partner for another couple , equal incentives for heterosexual and homosexual couples . Quindlen then lists examples of the injustice of society and the justice system to same-sex couples by withholding rights

br and privileges married couples enjoy just because they do not fit the man-woman definition of a couple

Quindlen draws a parallel between how twenty five years ago interracial marriages were seen as taboo and are now considered normal as compared to how same sex marriages are seen today . She ends her piece by suggesting that perhaps twenty five years from now , we will find the idea of barring same sex marriages just as absurd

But why would same sex marriages cease to be absurd just because of the passage of time

Quidlen subtly argues for the validity of same sex marriage and to persuade the reader to take a sympathetic stance on the issue simplifies the problem to the basics . Quidlen used simple words to show her point and the simplicity of it all , first when she wrote

Everybody wants a family , everybody wants love . Why can 't they have those ? Why focus on the gender and not on the more important values of love and family Quindlen is in fact saying that the issue with same-sex marriages can be stripped down to a basic-human level wherein gender need not play a role . So what if they are both men , if they are both women , she seems to be saying . They love one another , they are willing to commit , they desperately want to start a family , all of which even heterosexual couples have problems on also

By focusing on the shared values of love and commitment , Quindlen puts forward a powerful argument - that same sex couples are just like everybody else , how come they are treated differently ? The bottom line for Quindlen is that gender should not be an issue . Same sex marriages should not be tagged as same sex marriages but rather be recognized as marriages between two people loving each other , period

Quindlen does not take into consideration two factors : that homosexual relationships are different...
